Thank you for taking the time to visit our redesigned WebAtlas 2.0. We need your support. So please tell us about cemeteries in your area! Our WebAtlas reflects hours of archival search, meetings with communities, and detective work on the ground, and we have barely scratched the surface.
Before we can preserve African American gravesites in Mississippi, we must first locate them. Previous documentary programs often excluded African American cemeteries. Other organizations prioritized existing, recorded cemeteries–not those “lost” in the landscape.
Once we locate and add burial grounds to the WebAtlas, we can then begin preservation activities. Mapping burial grounds is the crucial first step to preventing erasure. Our WebAtlas is a tool for both education and preservation, allowing us to archive research relating to burial grounds and make it accessible to the public. We hope to offer a means of connecting the present with the past to build a better future.
